Follow me into the savvy shoppers' promise land. Your destination; a big-box, furnishings retailer. Your senses are instantly catapulted into hyper-drive, intoxicated by a kaleidoscope of color, texture, energy and delight. What is the secret ether that permeates every dimension of this idyllic, wall to wall retail environment? You see it, you feel it, your nerves are both stimulated and soothed by it, WHAT IS this magic, retail elixir??
It is this very experience that my philosophical design foundation has emerged from. CONTEXT before CONTENT. The design process begins by developing the CONTEXT. CONTEXT is anything to do with walls, floors and ceilings. A home's context is decisive. Context focuses on the home's bones, encouraging the contents to interact and engage one another within this established environment. A burgeoning relationship ensues. Over time, contents will be added, edited, finely tuned and given liberty for full expression. A well developed CONTEXT encourages and supports this relationship. Big Box furnishings retailers showcase an almost theatrical context for displaying contents. This "bigger-than-life" environment feels perfect; imparting a sense of calm and peace. Easy to understand how one experiences an 'urge to own' during a visit to one of these magical places. Our drive to buy is completely dictated by CONTEXT!
The love fest ends at your front door. Once the chosen CONTENTS pour into your living room, everything changes. Your environment feels out of focus, out of balance; not at all accepting of these new CONTENTS. How can the scale be all wrong? That chair that you had to invest in looks akward and unhappy with your wall color. Now what?
