… Unique California Casual
Part 2 of 3
By Kris Keller

Client Profile: Amy (a single career woman)

Design Expert: Kris Keller, The Design Source

Situation/Challenge: Amy just recently purchased a home in the Creve Coeur area that she wanted to redesign and decorate according to her tastes and lifestyle. The kitchen, in particular, was preventing her from bringing her unique "California Casual" makeover into the entire main living level.

Solution: The Design Source would reinvent Amy's entire main living level (including the entry, living, dining, kitchen and upper hall) with the centerpiece being a custom designed kitchen renovation.

Project Budget: $25,000 - $30,000
Includes all hardwood flooring in kitchen, dining room and living room, appliances, casegoods (cabinets, custom island and baseboards/trim), countertops, lighting, plumbing, painting and wallpapering)

Other: $25,000 - $30,000
Includes furnishings, accessories, window coverings, and area rugs

Master Design Plan Investment: $5,000

Timeframe: 3 months

With the electrical rough-in just completed by Dick Herber Electric, Amy left us with her thoughts in "Part 1" of our article in last month's issue … "Go into your renovation project with an open mind and don't think it will happen overnight. The total process and transformation, though, is one of the most exhilarating parts of the job, so enjoy it to the fullest!"

Amy's patient and unassuming personality and demeanor is helping her during this part of her renovation project. She stays focused on the reality her kitchen is becoming. Our electrician is completing the hard wiring for all of the recessed feature and cabinet lighting. Our ceramic tile company, Midwest Ceramic & Marble, installed the unusual "wave patterned" ceramic tile back splash, designed expressly for Amy's kitchen to enhance the "California mood" of the master designed plan. Cabinets are being installed and templated for laminate counters.

Currently, plumbers and electricians are scheduled for installation of appliances. The kitchen is now developing a one-of-a-kind personality and resembles our renderings down to the ceramic back splash design. Amy is truly excited with her emerging "dream custom kitchen" and waits anxiously for completion. A BIG, BIG item in particular on Amy's "want list" was a new pantry in her kitchen, complete with pull-out shelves.

Amy's old kitchen had ALMOST NO PANTRY (an extremely small one) and one of our great new storage solutions for her kitchen includes a pantry with pull-out shelving. This will certainly be worth the wait!

You could definitely say Amy is now "riding the wave" or "coasting along the California freeway" as she watches us (The Design Source) and our "team approach" take flight as we are about to deliver her new "California Casual" kitchen. And, it is because of careful planning and the processes set forth by our design firm, that Amy is able to coast along during this "middle of the road" part of the process of her renovation.

As Amy puts it, "One of the greatest benefits in hiring The Design Source is Kris Keller's tremendous resources … Kris handled all of the details including the selecting, bidding, hiring and overseeing of all of my contractors" … "I didn't need to get involved or become frustrated with my construction and installation process … Kris did it all … and I loved having everything in her hands!"

We look forward to the next issue of "Home" Improvement & Remodeling Magazine this November, when we will feature professional photos of Amy's finished custom kitchen.
